Mama's Energy Bites

The fun thing about these energy bites is that they are as delicious as a bar of chocolate but they provide heaps more nutritional benefits. I'm not claiming these energy bites are 'clean eating' or 100% healthy. They're aimed towards nursing Mama's, so they obviously aren't low cal, they are full of Nutella and what's wrong with that!

The main ingredient in this recipe which benefits breastfeeding Mothers is the brewers yeast. Don't mix this up with baking yeast though. It can be purchased in most health food shops or online. It does great things for my milk supply when used in conjunction with plenty of water.

These little balls are packed with protein and are unbelievably easy to make, probably within 20 minutes!

2 tablespoons of chunky peanut butter
3 tablespoons  of chocolate spread
1 teaspoon of honey
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2 tablespoons  of brewers yeast
1 tablespoons of desiccated coconut
1 tablespoons  of linseed
2 cups of porridge oats

  1. Start by placing the peanut butter, chocolate spread, vanilla extract and honey int a bowl. If it needs to be softened, do so in the microwave for 20 seconds.
  2. Add in the brewers yeast and stir. Be careful with this as it gets everywhere and when I inhale it, I have a coughing fit!
  3. Mix the coconut, linseed and gradually incorporate the oats.
  4. Use your hands to roll the mixture into small balls.

And that's it! This recipe usually makes about 10 balls, depending on size. You can omit are add any ingredients of your choice.

I usually have mine as an afternoon coffee treat with fruit or yogurt. Just be aware, it's not recommended to have anymore than 3 tablespoons of brewers yeast a day. So as tempting as it may be, don't eat all the energy bites at once!

I hope you enjoy and let me know what you think!
